Divine History

The Legend of The Infallible Archer

Khatu Shyam Ji, originally known as Barbarika, was the grandson of the mighty Bhima and the son of Ghatotkacha. Born with extraordinary strength and blessed with three infallible arrows from Prithvi Mata, he was powerful enough to single-handedly decide the outcome of the Mahabharata war.

Before the great war, Barbarika promised his mother to always stand with the weaker side — “Haare Ka Sahara”. Recognizing that this vow would paradoxically lead to the total annihilation of all warriors (as whichever side he joined would become stronger, causing him to switch), Lord Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, asked for his head in charity.

Without a moment's hesitation, Barbarika offered his head. Moved by this supreme sacrifice, Lord Krishna blessed him: “In the coming Kaliyuga, you shall be worshipped by my own name — Shyam — and devotees who call upon you shall never go empty-handed.”
